Training Recap: 1/9 – 1/15

Can’t believe it’s Monday already!

My Saturday was pretty standard: grocery shopping, house cleaning, long run, watching the Broncos get slaughtered.

Sunday was also pretty typical: church, lunch with friends, laying around watching TV. I was also productive in the kitchen for the first time in a while – I made banana bread using this recipe. Because of the altitude, I baked it at 325 for 1 hr 30 minutes (thanks to a note I had written on the recipe from last time I used it) instead of what they recommend and it turned out delicious.

I also made this zucchini soup that we’re going to eat tonight for dinner and boiled some eggs for salads this week thanks to the wonderfully precise and helpful instructions from Reluctant Entertainer. The eggs turned out well and they peel really easily, which was always the thing that prevented me from boiling eggs in the past. (Who has 10 minutes to spend peeling an egg?)

After a only-mildly-unpleasant dentist appointment this morning, I have been looking over my workouts from last week and am completely baffled. I took three rest days last week? I only ran 10 measly miles? 7 of which were during my long run on Saturday? No wonder it felt like crap.

Seriously, has this ever happened to you? I have no idea what I did last Monday night. My heart rate monitor and mapmyrun.com both say that I didn’t run. But why? And if I did take a rest day on Monday, why did I also take one on Wednesday and Friday? The ironic part was that our Wednesday night commitment was canceled so I even had an extra free night!

Apparently, the light upstairs was burnt out last week.

But I will say, I was exhausted last week. Probably because the week before, I had a record week – my total workout hours reached almost 5 and I burned 2,500 calories. I don’t think I’ve spent that much time training even for the Olympic triathlon. So maybe my body deceived me into resting?

Whatever happened, here is last week’s training.

Monday: Rest day?

Tuesday: 3.22 mile hill run (38:12, 11:51/mile)

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 20 min spin bike, 15 min incline walk on treadmill, 15 min walk with dogs outside

For my 20 minutes (and 2nd time ever) on the spin bike, I alternated 1 minute easy, 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy, 1 minute RPM over 100, etc. Got out of the saddle a couple of times, which brought my heart rate over 170! Great workout. I would like to try a spin class but haven’t really made the effort or commitment.

On the treadmill, I started off at 4.0 mph at 4.0 incline, worked up by .5 increments to 6.0 incline, alternating between 4.0 and 4.5 walking pace every minute. Also a good workout!! (But now I realize that I did two hill workouts in a week… aye aye aye).

Friday: Rest (although I did do some light strength training at my PT appt and my hip flexors were still sore Saturday)

Saturday: 7.11 mile run (1:21:17, 11:26/mile)

I actually took the dogs with me for 5 miles on this run. I was hoping it would wear them out for our football party and it sort of worked (they tuckered out sooner, I think). My legs were sore and tired from the PT exercises I had done Friday morning and my legs were ready to be done after 4 miles – although I felt it a lot in my calves and they didn’t get worked at PT.

I think I also went out too fast because I did the first mile in 10:56. It was hard to tell how fast I was going with my sore legs so I was trying to just go at an easy pace. All that said, I’m satisfied with the run overall. If I kept that pace for the entire half marathon, I would still PR!

Sunday: 30 minute Tabata workout

This week, I am aiming to be more diligent about going to bed on time. That means I will have to do my workouts either at lunch or right after work, instead of eating dinner and then going to the gym later. Whenever I do that, I get to bed too late. And when I don’t get enough sleep, I feel like a zombie who wants to eat every refined carb in a 5 mile radius. That’s what happened Thursday night. Not pretty.

A New Blog Name

Because it’s been a while since I lasted changed my blog name, I decided to change it again.

Just kidding.

But seriously, I did change it again.

Here’s why:

I decided on the name Joy in Being Broken back when I was really questioning my life, my relationship with God, and learning some hard lessons. 99% of my blog posts were about what I was learning and struggling through – I used this blog like a public journal, a space to put my thoughts into order.

While I’m still (obviously) a broken person in need of a Savior, I expanded the scope of my blog when I decided to stop maintaining my old triathlon blog and I just didn’t feel like the old blog name was the right fit anymore.

I have been trying to come up with a new name for the past couple of months. A few ideas I had:

From the Inside Out

My Whole Self

Healthy Inside and Out

Girl + God

But none of them screamed “This is it!” Until I had an epiphany today with this current name: Life, Really.

This name resonated with me for 2 reasons:

1) Like I mentioned last week, I am committed to being an authentic blogger. I don’t sugarcoat things, I don’t hide things and I don’t pretend to be someone I’m not. This blog is about my life as it really is.

2) Jesus said in John 10, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” I didn’t know what life was really about until I knew Jesus. So my spiritual posts also reveal what life is, really.

As for the tagline, I chose:

  • “Authentic” for Reason #1 above.
  • “Journey” because, like I mentioned in my last new blog name post, life is a journey: “You grow, you shrink, you step forward, you step backward, you succeed, you fail. But through it all, those who have Christ, have ‘a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain [into the presence of the Father], where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf…’ (Hebrews 6:19-20).”
  • “Faith” because Christ the center of my life and my reason for living.
  • “Fitness” because I love being active and blogging about my athletic feats. 🙂
  • “Fun” because I believe God wants us to enjoy our time here on earth with our family and friends

“And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

The holiday weekend

This holiday weekend felt blissfully long and disappointingly short. Long because Friday I woke up and felt like it should be Sunday–but there were 2 more glorious days to go until then. Short because it’s now over.

Yesterday, Travis and I went to Barnes and Noble to look at books. I bought “The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion & Purpose” by Matthew Kelly. I’m excited to read it, but won’t let myself start it until I finish “Knowing God” (which I find very hard to read when I’m sick because when my head hurts and my ears are ringing, I can’t concentrate on anything very deep).

Then we went to the Rec. I had to exercise. I can’t stand sitting around all day “resting.” I feel worse when I do that. So I walked on the treadmill at an incline and then did situps. Today I did one of my Pilates videos. It feels good to be active again (I didn’t exercise at all last week due to being sick).

Last night, we went to the Nutcracker with Paul and Carrie. It was so fun to watch! It made me really want to dance again. The school that put it on (the Boulder Ballet) has a drop-in Beginner’s Ballet class for adults on Monday nights. It’s up in Boulder so I may not do it…but I have definitely been motivated to search more earnestly for an adult class that I can take.

Today I decided to not go to church. I can’t sing (my voice has been coming and going due to coughing a lot) and we were supposed to be working the Toddler room (which I couldn’t because of being sick…though the Lord was very faithful in finding someone to cover for me). I listened to last week’s sermon by John Piper instead. It was good–and it reminds me of how much I miss his preaching. Travis and I continue to try to keep open minds for our main pastor…but more often than not, we walk away from his sermons feeling a little disappointed.

I just love Piper’s enthusiasm, his child-like wonder at the Word of God that inspires me to see it through a new lense. I love how he quotes other Bible verses to show how the whole Bible ties together. I love how he digs deeper and doesn’t just tell us what the verse means but analyzes why the verse means what it does and what that meaning means our relationship with God. I love being challenged to see the Bible in new ways and being convicted that I do not understand the gospel enough nor am I sufficiently riveted by it.

One benefit of this whole being-sick thing is that it has motivated me to take my health more seriously. I have known that I need to drink more water (especially living in CO–I get headaches from being dehydrated frequently), exercise more (I’ve been averaging 2-3 times a week), and cutting back on the sweets (at home I do pretty well but at work…) I have been inspired to drink more water, exercise at least 5 times a week, and to really limit my sweets to at most one a day and to make them things that really count (no more Tootsie Rolls and peanut butter cups at work!)

We’ll see how long it lasts…but I’m really going to try!!
