A Chilly Weekend

This past weekend was a busy and chilly one! On Thursday, I ducked out of work early to get my hair cut! I chopped off 4-5 inches.

haircutI really like it BUT I haven’t had my hair this short for several years, so it’s taking some time to get used to it. It’s too short for a ponytail now, but still long enough to get in my face so exercising and brushing my teeth are interesting. It also requires a lot more work to look presentable – with long hair, I often blowdried it halfway and then put it up in a messy bun. Not anymore!

Friday, my work had our holiday party at a bowling alley, and I took Emma along. She was a hit! I was able to have one of my co-workers hold her while I was bowling and she was happy and content for almost 2 full games. I didn’t take any pictures though… *fail*

After the party, I went over to my friend Charlotte’s house to watch her 2 kids while she and her husband (also named Travis) went to his work Christmas party. They’re going to watch Emma this Thursday night while we go to (my) Travis’ work party. It was really fun watching her kids. They’re 4 and almost 2, and they were very obedient and fun! Emma was having a rough night though because she is very congested right now, and I think she’s getting her top 2 teeth. Poor baby.

On Saturday, Travis and I got up at 4 am to help out with our friend D’s Fa La La race. I took Emma up to my friend Carrie’s house, who graciously agreed to watch Emma at 6 am even though she isn’t a morning person! Fortunately, Emma was very happy and easy all day – and majorly cute.

emmatripleThe race went well, and even though it was only about 1 degree out, I stayed warm in my many layers as long as I was moving around. After the race, I picked Emma up and we went out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings with some of the race staff – our post-race tradition.

Once we were done eating, it was already 4 pm! Emma took a little nap on the way home, and stayed asleep long enough for me to get all our race stuff put away, which felt good to get done.

Sunday, Travis and I were on projection and lights so we had to get to church an hour early. I also forgot our gifts for the foster children that our church ‘adopts’ at Christmas so in the middle of church (when Emma was fussy because she needed a nap), I ran home to get them and Emma napped in the car. After church, we went straight home, ate lunch and then I took a 3 hour nap! I got up a little over halfway through to check on Travis and Emma, and Emma was still sleeping too! She slept for 2.5 hours, which happens fairly often on Sundays, but not any other day. Apparently, church is exhausting!

Even though I enjoy the chilly weather because the snow doesn’t melt, I do miss being able to be outside. I’m glad it’s finally warming up around here.

Week 10 Training: 4/23 – 4/29

We spontaneously planted a tree on Sunday!

The bottom is hidden in shadows, so you can’t see our landscaping but we had some really pretty Yarrow planted there. This is what it looked like last year:

But apparently, Yarrow is an invasive species of plant. Meaning it TOOK OVER. And as I told Travis, I don’t allow rogue plants in my landscaping. They have to stay where they’re planted or I’m ripping it out (sorry plant). I’m kicking myself now that we didn’t get a before picture because those plants were massive. Each plant epicenter + its intricate, shallow root base had to have been 3 feet in diameter.

In place of the Yarrow, we planted an Autumn Blaze Maple tree. It has small white blossoms in the spring and turns bright red in the fall. It’s also hardy enough to withstand a lot of wind – which is key since this poor little tree is on the west side of our house (the strongest winds always come from the west).

As you can imagine, the Yarrow left quite a big empty gap so there’s still more room for us to plant some more perennials. But now I’ll be on guard against ROGUE PLANTS.

Last week’s training went fairly well. My legs were pretty tight so I ended up wearing my compression tights to bed 4 nights in a row. They really do help!!

Monday: 3.24 mile easy run (36:52, 11:23/mile); Drop 10 Workout from Self

Tuesday: 4.11 mile run with 4 Yasso 800s (50:14; 12:13/mile)

I warmed up for .5 mile, ran 4 x 800 with 2-2:30 rest in between, ran .5 mile  home to drop off pooches and finished with 1 mile moderate. 800s were 4:56, 5:01, 5:01, 4:53. If these 800s are supposed to determine how fast I can run a marathon, I think that keeping them around 5:00 – 5:30 is a good goal (since that’s roughly my marathon goal, in hours obviously).

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 7 mile run (1:13:50, 10:28/mile); UB weights + 30 one-legged squats

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 15 mile long run (2:55:07; 11:50/mile); 1.15 mile walk with pooches

Sunday: 1.5 mile walk with pooches; 2 hours of gardening + cleaning

Total Running Miles: 29.4

For my long run last Saturday, I tried out a new hairstyle. My hair is about the longest I’ve ever had it (tied with the length of my hair when I got married in 2007) and so, my go-to hairstyles no longer work. But the front layers of my hair are too short to be practical for long hairstyles so I’ve been extremely frustrated. I seem to have the greatest hair problems whenever I go on a run with Travis. Anyway, I tried a hairstyle I’ve seen and heard from other ladies with long hair: the braided ponytail.

I had to wet my ponytail a bit so that my hair didn’t slip out of the braid (my hair is ridiculously fine and doesn’t stay anywhere you put it) but I really liked this. It didn’t bounce all over the place like a regular ponytail and I didn’t have to comb a rats nest out later. Win, win.

Training Recap: 1/2 – 1/8

My weekend was very relaxing – Friday night, Travis played broomball with some friends and I just stayed home. I made a frozen pizza for dinner, went to Target and bought some binders/scrapbooks to create a new picture album, a memory book for races, as well as a memory book for holidays, vacations, etc. Then I organized my scrapbooking tote and watched The Wedding Planner.

Saturday, I got up at 6:15 to eat breakfast and feed the pooches before heading out on a run at 6:50, right when it started getting light outside. I ended up doing 8.27 miles at a 11:12 pace, which I’m pretty excited about (that pace would give me a 4 minute PR in the half). After my run, I did 2 things I hadn’t done in a year: used Photoshop (tried to teach my friend how to use it for basic things) and got my hair cut. No, I hadn’t gotten my hair cut in over a year. Whoops.

But really, it’s because my hair only grew this much:

Anyway, after my haircut, I took a nap while Travis hung this up in our guest bedroom:

This makes you want to come visit, doesn’t it?

Now you can understand my hesitation to let him put it up anywhere in our house – it’s HUGE. But supposedly this is just “temporary” until we can take it back to Minnesota to his parents’ house. I actually don’t hate it. I just think it looks awkward because of how big it is, and how small our house is.

After I was done lamenting about what he had done to our lovely guest room, I worked on my race memory book, and then we went out to dinner at Namiko’s, a sushi bar near our house. We tried a couple of new kinds and found one that we loved – it was called Gemini and was a tempura roll with tuna, crab, and salmon inside. Delicious.

After that, we read and went to bed around 9:30. We lead such exciting lives, don’t we?

The next morning, we both slept in until 8:30! I can’t believe we got 11 hours of sleep. I got up at 6 to let the dogs out and feed them. But then I put Charlie back in her kennel and Katy crawled in between us on the bed for another 2 1/2 hours.

When we finally did get up, we went to church, grocery shopping, and then over to some friends’ house to watch the Broncos game. What a great game! We were all totally pumped that they won, and in the way that they did. Amazing. Go Tebow!

After the game, we went home, worked out, finished doing laundry and dishes, read for a while, and went to bed.

And now it’s Monday again! That means it’s time for a training recap.

Monday: 3.5 mile run (40:04, 11:29/mile)

Tuesday: Half mile repeats (total of 3.3 miles, all 4 around 4:30); 20 minutes strength training

For my strength training, I did the exercises I learned in physical therapy. The hardest one to do is backward lunges off a high step or box (this time I used a step with 4 risers, but I’ve also used a box jump before). Stand on your right foot with your left foot off the step. Slowly bend your right leg until your thigh is parallel to the ground and then step down on to your left foot, concentrating on keeping your right knee straight forward. Start with 1 set of 12-15 times and switch sides. Work up to 3 sets. Major butt soreness.

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 3.04 mile tempo run (31:15, 10:17/mile); 35 minutes of easy yoga

I did my usual tempo formula: 0.5 mile warmup, 2 miles tempo, 0.5 mile cool down. The tempo miles were 9:55 and 10:20. I think the second one was slower mostly because I had to pick up and throw away two poop bags and I didn’t stop my watch. My total time was still 7 seconds faster than the same run last week. Improvement!

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 8.27 mile run (1:32:40, 11:12/mile)

I’ll give details about this run in another post, since I wore my new Under Armour tights. But for now, I’ll say that it was a tough run, but I’m very pleased with my pace.

Sunday: 45 minutes of Denise Austin’s Ultimate Fat Burner

An oldie but goodie. I’m not sure how smart it was to do this video – it involves a lot of lateral movements and plyometrics and now my right knee hurts a bit. But I sweated a lot and got my heart rate up to 173 so it was at least partly a success. I think I’m going to forego the run today though and do some cross training.

Save the Suave

As a person interested in health and fitness, I consistently try to improve my daily habits to promote my health. I’ve already done that with drinking 64 oz of water daily (still going strong!) and trying to maintain the balance between training and the rest of life. My latest focus has been on not washing my hair every day.

Here’s the dish on my hair:

  • It’s color-treated (from a box) to be slightly blonder than natural.
  • It’s naturally pin straight.
  • I get it cut every 6 months, usually going from shoulder length to chin length and back again.
  • I often get the comment at salons that my hair is thin but I have “a lot of it.”
  • I also get the comment that my hair is “very healthy” — since I use Pantene or Suave shampoo, [used to] wash, blow-dry and curl my hair daily, and only get it cut every 6 months, this comment usually makes me feel rather smug for thwarting the system of expensive shampoos, hair treatments and the like.

Even though my hair has always tended to be on the drier side and as such, has never really necessitated daily washings, I couldn’t fathom not washing my hair. I feared waking up with the hair that is just slightly greasy enough that you can tell it needs to be washed. I also enjoy a clean head and the smell of just-shampooed hair.

An additional objection I had to this notion of not washing my hair everyday was that I exercise a lot and I get really sweaty. I was trying to be considerate of those around me by washing my hair after every workout (some days I even washed my hair twice).

But then one day at work, I was talking with some of my female co-workers about a blog called My Yellow Sandbox. Abby, whose blog it is, only washes her every “fourish” days. Apparently, washing your hair every day makes it drier (because you’re washing out the natural oils your scalp produces that are good for your hair). She even says that the less you wash your hair, the less greasy it will be.

That was pretty intriguing to me. Less greasy the less I wash it? I’ll try it!

And you know what? I’m a believer. Here is photo evidence of me going 3 days with washing my hair once (I don’t think I could go 4 or more like Abby, because of the whole buckets-of-sweat thing).

This is my strategy:

Day 1

Wash and blow dry hair. Style with curling iron or flatiron; minimal product (as in none). Leave hair down.

Day 2

{Disclaimer: I went swimming and got my hair wet this morning so I wasn’t styling my hair from a dry state.} Blow dry hair and spray with dry shampoo before styling with flatiron. OR Blow dry hair halfway and pull hair into messy ponytail. Spray with hairspray.

Day 3

Pull hair into messy ponytail and spray with hairspray.

Since I go swimming every 2-3 days, I can’t really get completely away from blow-drying (wet hair is not very professional looking) or heat-styling (my hair does kinks instead of wavy) on the days I swim, unless I go swimming at night. If I do that, I towel dry my hair so that it’s not sopping wet, pull it into a braid, and go to bed. The next morning, I either put my hair half-up (and curl the ends, for reason aforementioned) or into a messy ponytail (Reason #1 Why I’m Loving the Length My Hair Is Right Now.)

I’ve also discovered that after a particularly sweaty workout, my hair looks better (i.e. less greasy from sweat) if I get it wet before styling it, rather than just trying to blow-dry the sweat out. Even then, I try to only blow-dry my hair until it’s slightly damp, then put it in a messy ponytail. Not only does that save me time and lessen the damage, my slippery straight hair stays up better if I put it up when it’s damp.

I’m still working on getting my routine down and trying to minimize the amount I use the blow-dryer and heat tools. Last night, I went on a run after work and then let my hair dry after my shower. (Win!) This morning, I still curled my hair (Lose!) and pulled it into a low ponytail. I suppose I could have foregone the curling iron but I felt that curling it would look better.

I do feel better about not washing my hair as often, and haven’t really had any or much trouble with it being greasy. (Dry shampoo also helps — I have TRESemmé Dry Shampoo for Dry Hair). Most of all, I like being able to get ready so much faster in the morning! Now if only I could find a way to keep my hair dry while swimming, I’d be set.
